The people at American Harvest sent me a sample of this vodka, and when I pulled the bottle out of the box, something seemed very familiar. It took me a while, but I finally figured out that I had tasted American Harvest Organic Spirit before.
?
A few months ago, I was dining at One 53, a wonderful local foods-focused restaurant just outside of Princeton, N.J. The bartender brought the bottle out for my friend Michelle and me to have a tasting of this new organic spirit they had just started carrying. I liked it enough that I made notes on it for future reference.?
?Very smooth,? I wrote in my notes. ?Could drink this on its own. Need to try in mixed drinks.?
?
Like most vodkas, there isn?t a distinct flavor to American Harvest. I?d best describe it as smooth, crisp and easy-drinking.
?
Here are a few of American Harvest Organic Spirit?s sustainable highlights.
- Made in small batches from organic winter wheat grown on a family owned and sustainably managed American farm.?
- One-third of the monthly electrical consumption at the distillery comes from local wind generated power.
- Distillation waste is used as cattle feed.
- The bottles are coated and decorated with organic inks and water-soluble varnishes.
American Harvest can be used like any vodka ? on the rocks, in a martini, or in any mixed drink that calls for vodka. Here are the two drinks I made with it over the weekend. They were both very pleasant.
?
In a rocks glass combine:
-
2 parts American Harvest Organic Spirit
-
1 1/2 parts fresh squeezed orange juice
-
1 part R.W. Knudsen?s Just Cranberry juice
-
1/2 part agave nectar
Stir well, garnish with an orange slice
?
Harvest Moon
In a cocktail shaker with ice combine:
Shake well and pour into a martini glass or other appropriate glassware. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Wine, beer and spirits disclaimer:?I am not paid by any producer of wine, beer or spirits to write about their product, although the company may provide me with a sample of the product. I am not a professional reviewer of wine, beer or spirits. I?ll write about the product if it?s something that I like and if I think the producer is working toward making the product in an environmentally friendlier fashion.
