Scherzer wins 16th, Tigers beat White Sox 3-0

DETROIT (AP) ? With almost two months left in the season, Max Scherzer has already equaled his career high in wins.

He's also closing in on another lofty mark ? 1,000 strikeouts.

"Wins are important for the team, and I'm up about that," Scherzer said. "But to reach milestones for your career, sometimes that's a better personal reflection of yourself."

Scherzer will have to wait for that 1,000th strikeout after falling one short Saturday night, but the Detroit right-hander took a shutout into the eighth inning, and the bullpen held on in the Tigers' 3-0 victory over the punchless Chicago White Sox. Scherzer became baseball's first 16-game winner.

The White Sox have lost nine straight. The AL Central-leading Tigers have won 11 of 12, despite playing most of that stretch without slugger Miguel Cabrera.

"I've always said that we have so much talent in this clubhouse," Scherzer said. "Miggy's a big part of it, but even without Miggy, there's plenty of guys in here that are very capable of dominating in the major leagues."

Cabrera has been bothered by hip and abdominal problems and sat out Saturday.

Scherzer (16-1) allowed three hits in 7 2-3 innings. Jose Veras got the third out of the eighth, and Joaquin Benoit finished for his 12th save in 12 chances.

John Danks (2-9) allowed six hits in seven innings, including solo homers by Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta and Jose Iglesias.

Scherzer is the first pitcher to win at least 16 of his first 17 decisions since Roger Clemens started 16-1 in 2001, according to STATS. Scherzer walked three and struck out six.

"It is pretty tough to do much against Scherzer right now," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "He's just got too much stuff. He can throw all of his off-speed pitches exactly where he wants them, and you can't tell them apart from his fastball. So you are watching for the break, and you don't have a chance to catch up to his velocity."

Scherzer also won 16 games last season. He's been the beneficiary of a lot of run support this year, but he didn't need much against the White Sox. Hunter opened the scoring with a homer to left in the first.

"These are real baseball games. We love those close games, those tight games," Hunter said. "Good pitching beats good hitting any day. Whenever they make a mistake, you just don't want to miss it."

Peralta ? who faces a possible suspension from Major League Baseball's drug investigation ? made it 2-0 with a drive to the bushes beyond the center-field wall in the second.

Iglesias, acquired just before the trade deadline ? partly as insurance against a possible suspension to Peralta ? added a homer of his own in the fourth.

This was the second game with the Tigers for Iglesias. He hit one homer in 63 games for Boston this season.

The White Sox, meanwhile, got another sold start that they failed to take advantage of. The Chicago starters have a 2.72 ERA during this losing streak.

Chicago pinch-hitter Jordan Danks hit a long flyball in the eighth that center fielder Austin Jackson caught at the wall in left-center. When Veras came in, Alexei Ramirez jack-knifed out of the way on his first pitch ? only to have the breaking ball drop across the heart of the plate for a strike.

The White Sox have scored two runs in their last three games.

NOTES: Chicago has requested waivers on OF Dewayne Wise for the purpose of granting his unconditional release. Wise has been on the DL since May 30 with a strained right hamstring and right oblique strain. ... The Tigers wore jerseys that said "Tigres" while honoring the contributions of Hispanic and Latino players. ... Detroit tries for a three-game sweep Sunday, with RHP Rick Porcello (8-6) taking the mound against Chicago RHP Andre Rienzo (0-0).

Windows 8 Grabs more Market Share, but so do Older Versions

Windows-8-Grabs-more-Market-Share,-but-so-do-Older-Versions-_394z296.jpg

Windows 8 keeps clawing its way up the market share charts, but not at the expense of Windows 7 or Windows XP.

According to Netmarketshare, Windows 8's market share now stands at 5.4 percent, up 0.3 percent from a month ago when it finally surpassed Windows Vista. Once again, Vista's market share declined last month, this time by about 0.38 percent, to a total of 4.24 percent.

Meanwhile, Windows 7 and Windows XP are holding strong. In fact, Windows 7's market share increased last month by 0.12 percent, and Windows XP saw a 0.02 percent bump in market share despite the looming end of XP support by Microsoft. Both Windows 7 and XP remain the most widely-used operating systems by far, with 44.49 percent and 37.19 percent of the market, respectively, according to Netmarketshare.

In other words, any market share that Windows 8 gained last month appears to be at the expense of Windows Vista.

While it's not surprising that users are eager to upgrade from the widely-panned operating system, getting people to switch from XP or Windows 7 may be tougher for Microsoft, especially among users who want to stick with a traditional desktop interface.

Windows 8.1 will make some concessions for those users, with the return of the Start button, a boot-to-desktop option, quicker access to advanced desktop functions, and a way to prevent modern-style menus from popping up during desktop use.

But ultimately, Microsoft and PC makers must convince the masses that they need to upgrade their hardware to touch-enabled laptops, hybrids, or desktops. Cheaper touchscreen devices could help on that front, but it'll likely be a while before the market share needle moves much for Windows XP and Windows 7.

Fuel-saving idle elimination coming to the masses

Autos

Aug. 2, 2013 at 1:34 PM ET

GM?s move to make start/stop technology standard on the 2014 Chevy Malibu is the first ripple of the wave of U.S. vehicles that will be outfitted with the technology as automakers search for more ways to improve gas mileage.

It comes with a variety of names, including a start-stop system, idle elimination, idle-stop-go and micro-hybrid.

?Engine stop-start isn?t a brand new technology, but the latest systems benefit from significant advances made in the last few years,? said John Nielsen, AAA?s director of Automotive Engineering and Repair.

?This technology is only going to gain momentum as vehicle manufactures work to meet the more stringent Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards set for 2016.?

The idea behind start/stop is that the engine shuts down when stopped for a period of time, then when engaged it starts up again. Ideally the driver would never notice it, but with past systems drivers have complained about delayed engine response, excessive noise, shuddering and shaking with systems.

More from The Detroit Bureau:?Ousted from Volvo, Jacoby Now Will Run GM's Vast International Empire

Most vehicles with the system have a shut off switch allowing drivers to simply turn it off if they?re unhappy with it. The Malibu will not have a kill switch. It?s the first high volume, non-hybrid to not offer the option of a kill switch.

But with corporate average fuel economy numbers rising in the coming years, companies have been working diligently to refine the technology. This system is expected to improve the Malibu?s fuel economy by 5 percent in city driving.

The first non-hybrid stop-start systems in the U.S. market arrived on high-end vehicles from BMW, Mercedes and Porsche. For the 2013 model year, Jaguar joined the group. It?s not surprising that European and Japanese vehicles would lead the way on bringing the technology to the U.S. as it's estimated that 40 to 45 percent of vehicles in those places use the technology.

While it was once tied to expensive vehicles, the technology is running across all makes and models in 2014. The new BMW 4-Series, 1-Series and 3-Series will have it, as will the Jaguar F-Type, Audi RS7, Ford Fusion and Mazda3. Even trucks will start to see some systems: Dodge is adding stop-start to its V6-powered Ram 1500 pickup for a one mile per gallon fuel economy improvement.

More from The Detroit Bureau:?Ford Admits Delaying Recall, Pays $17 million?Fine

Lux Research, a research and advisory firm providing strategic advice and ongoing intelligence for emerging technologies, predicts that more than 8 million vehicles in North America will be equipped with engine stop-start systems by 2017.

Additionally, IHS Automotive predicts more than 20 percent of vehicles built in North America will have the system by 2017, which is four times higher than the current number of vehicles.

Knowing the public?s perception of the system, GM spent a lot of time to perfect its version before putting it in the Malibu. Besides issues related to noise and vibration, shutting off the engine also impacts the car?s other systems, like lights, air conditioning, etc.

To avoid problems, the Malibu?s stop-start consists mainly of a beefed-up starter and a small auxiliary battery in the trunk. The extra battery is there so drivers won?t notice a momentary dimming of lights or slowing of the air-conditioning fan when the engine stops and starts.

The car uses the same electronic controls as several hybrids GM already builds. Those vehicles are widely considered industry leaders for smooth, unobtrusive operation.

Among other things, the system is programmed so it doesn?t keep cycling on and off in stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic. It also measures the inside and outside temperatures to keep the passenger compartment comfortable.

More from The Detroit Bureau: Jaguar to unveil its first-ever SUV

One reason the technology hasn?t caught on is that it isn?t necessarily cheap. The systems cost a few hundred dollars, but drivers can make it up, according to AAA. If gasoline costs $3.75 per gallon, the owner of a car that normally gets 20 mpg and is driven 12,000 miles per year would save an estimated $167 per year in fuel costs if the vehicle were equipped with an engine stop-start system. In this case, the system would pay for itself in less than two years and offer ongoing savings thereafter.

Another reason for the lack of promotion is that the Environmental Protection Agency, which helps determine mileage ratings for cars and trucks, doesn?t perform an appropriate test to help determine the system?s effectiveness and its impact on mileage ratings.

The New York Times Company Sells The Boston Globe (And Related Properties) For $70M

bostonglobeThe New York Times is selling the Boston Globe and the rest of its New England Media Group to John Henry, the billionaire who's principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, for $70 million in cash. The news has prompted some rather depressing comments about the Globe's relative worth. For example, Ken Doctor at the Nieman Journalism Lab noted that the price is $12 million less than the five-year contract that Red Sox pitcher John Lackey signed in 2009. But harshest comparison may with the Globe of 20 years ago, which The Times acquired for $1.1 billion.

What is the easiest and most natural way to eliminate the symptoms of PMS and menopause: hot flashes, mood swings, night sweat, and abdominal pain that would fell a line backer? Answer: Change your diet. Changing your diet will eliminate nutrients that trigger these symptoms (i.e. too much copper) and add nutrients that will bring your body back into biobalance (more zinc.) In this case, biobalance is getting your copper/zinc ratio back into biobalance. (For the scientific, that?s dividing the milligrams of copper in your body by the milligrams of zinc and getting a number between four and 12.)

Chinese Get Their Feet Wet at Chongqing?s Unique River Restaurant

Aptly named the River Cafe, one restaurant in Chongqing, southern China, has come up with an ingenious way of attracting clients. Taking advantage of a nearby stream, the owners have set up dozens of tables straight on the water, offering patrons a cool escape from the unbearable heat.

With summer temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius, the Chinese are always looking for new and enjoyable ways to cool off. The River Cafe, in Chongqing, is inviting locals and tourists to take off their shoes and grab a seat in the waters of a cooling stream. Since it?s too hot to serve their delicious food inside or in the sun, the managers of this popular venue have decided to set up most of the tables straight on the water, under the shade of trees. The pop-up restaurant now has more tables in the stream than it has on land, which can seat up to 300 people at a time. The water doesn?t look very clean, and you can see plastic bottles floating through the plastic tables, but it beats facing the scorching sun or going to overcrowded swimming pools like the famous Dead Sea of China.

River-Restaurant-Chongqing

When I first saw the photos of Chongqing?s River Cafe I thought they looked oddly familiar. Then I realized the place looks a lot like Vila Escudero, the famous waterfall restaurant in the Philippines.

First steps of gene regulation evolution revealed

A study of gene expression led by scientists at the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) and the University of Cambridge has revealed the first steps of evolution in gene regulation in mice. Published in the journal Cell, the research has implications for the study of differences in gene regulation between people.

"We found an impressive amount of variation between these apparently very similar mice in terms of transcription-factor binding, which is an important indicator of gene-regulation activity," says Paul Flicek of EMBL-EBI. "Often you'll see a specific combination of these transcription factors acting in concert and it was fascinating for us to see just how important these combinations are. They're much more likely to be conserved over the course of evolution than whatever DNA sequence they might be binding to."

The team studied gene expression in five very closely related mouse species in order to pinpoint changes at the very earliest stages of evolution. To do this, they compared the way that three transcription factors (TFs) bind to genes to control if they're turned on or off in liver cells in the different mouse species.

"By looking at mice that are very closely related to each other, we were able to capture a snapshot of what regulatory evolution is happening," explains Duncan Odom of the University of Cambridge. "That's important because it's much harder to see how something has evolved when you don't have a clear picture of the starting point."

Say you wanted to know how an orange tree evolved, but you could only compare it to an elm or oak. You'd have greater insight into how an orange tree evolved if you could compare it to much more closely related plants like grapefruit and lemons, which could give insight into how each came from an ancestral citrus plant. In this study, instead of comparing leaf and fruit shapes, the team looked at gene regulation in mice that had only recently diverged from one another. They demonstrated that TFs work in clusters that are conserved in order to ensure genetic and evolutionary stability.

The researchers contrasted their findings with gene-regulation data from another model organism, Drosophila, to see where the similarities lay. They found that there were a lot more differences between closely related mouse strains than there are between distantly related fruit-fly strains.

"Mammals have lots of DNA kicking around that doesn't code for proteins, while fruit flies have relatively little. So a mouse's regulatory wiring will just have a lot more wiggle room than a fruit fly's," says Paul. "That gives us a clearer picture of what we can expect to learn about mammalian genetic regulation from fruit flies."

The study could help scientists understand how gene regulation differs from one person to the next, explaining why genes that cause disease in some people don't have that effect in others.

Police: Mchenry offenders used golf carts as bumper cars

McHENRY ? Police are looking for suspects they say turned McHenry Country Club into a bumper car course.

Between late Tuesday and early Wednesday, a group drove golf carts over greens and into signs and trees, causing as much as $4,000 in damage along the way, according to a news release from the McHenry Police Department.

The country club, 820 N. John St., had brought in about 30 extra carts for a tournament a couple days before and had them sitting outside. At least five of the carts were damaged, Deputy Chief John Birk said.

They sustained broken wheels and body moldings. A steering wheel came off one, Birk said.

"Basically, what it looks like is they used the carts as bumper cars out on the golf course," he said.

The course also sustained damage on greens, fairways and signs.

Birk said several of the carts had been left on the golf course once they'd become unusable.

Police responded to the incident Wednesday morning.

The suspects are wanted for criminal damage to property, the release said. An investigation is ongoing.

McHenry Police are asking anyone with information to contact their investigations unit at 815-363-2599 or the McHenry Police tip line at 815-363-2124.
