University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, MN)

The University of St. Thomas Opus College Of Business in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, seeks an exceptional leader to become its next dean, one who will advance its vision to be recognized nationally and internationally for educating highly principled global business leaders.

Having just successfully completed a $515 million capital campaign, the University of St. Thomas stands poised to expand and enhance its vision to educate leaders with a strong moral core who will advance the common good by shaping their communities locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

As the largest college within the university, the Opus College of Business is dedicated to advancing the university?s mission through undergraduate and graduate business programs that transform the way business is taught and practiced. The Opus College of Business, accredited two years ahead of schedule by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB) in 2010, earned the ranking of 104 nationally by U.S. News and World Report in its first year of eligibility.

A Catholic, liberal arts university, St. Thomas emphasizes active, inquiry-based learning; service and community engagement; and faculty research that fosters student development. Within the Opus College of Business, a distinctive curricular blend of theory and practice, coupled with an emphasis on ethical decision-making in real-world business applications, adds value and context to the student experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The dean of the Opus College of Business will join an exceptional community of faculty who bring to the classroom industry experience; expertise in current practices; strong academic and professional credentials; a dedication to teaching and active learning; and a commitment to scholarly research, professional engagement and service to the university and the community. Faculty and staff actively advance the university?s vision of academic distinction through a global focus, student-faculty collaboration in learning, research and service projects, and by helping students find their own paths to meaningful and successful lives.

Under the decade-long leadership of its current dean, the Opus College of Business has grown substantially, increasing its full-time faculty roster to 100, including seven endowed chairs. The college has expanded and enhanced its graduate degree programs to include a leading-edge full-time MBA that complements its part-time and specialized MBA programs; as well as masters of science degrees in accountancy and real estate. The college has achieved a national reputation in business ethics and entrepreneurship education that enhances the student experience and contributes to accomplishing the mission of the college and university. With more than 2,300 students, the undergraduate business population has grown to represent more than 43 percent of the total undergraduate population of the university, while the graduate student population now accounts for 30 percent of total graduate enrollment. A professional staff of 110 assists and supports the academic programs of the college and its 12 centers and institutes, including a well-established executive education program under the Center for Business Excellence. The addition of two new buildings comprising 161,000 square feet between 2004 and 2006, as well as gifts totaling $60 million, further augmented the college?s facilities and resource base.

The next dean of the Opus College of Business will build upon the many successes of the business school and further enhance its reputation, stature and programs. He or she should be a proven academic and scholar with an earned doctorate and a record of teaching, research and professional engagement that would merit a tenured appointment in the college. The dean will have exceptional administrative experience and a demonstrated track record of achievements as a leader in a recognized school of business. He or she will have the professional presence and communication skills to interact with business leaders, benefactors and alumni; and to build lasting and productive relationships with the business community in the Twin Cities area and beyond. The dean will embrace the college?s shared governance system and have the capacity to collaboratively develop processes and incentive systems that motivate, energize and empower faculty and staff to reach their personal and organizational goals. He or she will also have the entrepreneurial spirit to strategically assess and take advantage of new opportunities for college growth, and the competitive drive to meet the difficult challenges confronting management education in the 21st century. The next dean will be a forward-thinking, inspirational and authentic leader with unquestioned integrity and a deep understanding of and commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition.

The new dean will lead the college during a time of great potential. He or she will play a critical role in implementing the next phase of the college?s growth and will have an unparalleled opportunity to make a personal mark on the future of the college.
